Today we leave Casablanca (the economic capital of Morocco) to Rabat. Here we will visit the Oudaya Kasbah and its beautiful gardens. After finishing the tour in Rabat we head to Fez where we stay overnight in a local hotel.
Today we explore the intellectual capital of Fez. It is the 2nd biggest city in Morocco (population of 1 million). Fes is the former capital and one of the country’s four imperial cities. Fez comprises 3 distinct: Fez el Bali (the oldest part surrounded by a wall, where you find more than 9000 narrow streets and allies). Fez-Jdid or the new Fes is the home of the Mellah – the Jewish quarter. The Ville Nouvelle is the newest section of Fez created during the French occupation. Fez el Bali is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its medina (old city) is the largest in the world.
Today we drive in the direction of Meknes where we will go back in time to the 3rd century. We will visit the most important archaeological site in Morocco called Volubilis (which features Roman ruins ). Then we will visit Meknes (named after a Berber tribe). Meknes was the capital of Morocco under Moulay Ismail. We will have a guided tour of Meknes and we stay here overnight.
Today we will drive through the Ifrane (the Berber name of Ifrane means caves). Ifrane is nicknamed a little Switzerland since it is a green town, There is also a ski resort in the Middle Atlas. After Ifrane, we drive to Errachidia and Erfoud (famous for their pottery and fossils). Then we head to Rissani -the hometown of the Alaouist dynasty. Later we reach Merzouga desert and we will have dinner at a local desert hotel.
Today we will have a tour of the Erg Chebbi desert, the largest dunes in Morocco. We will see plenty of nomadic tents in the middle of the desert, we will also stop by a nomadic family to have tea. Then we will visit the village -Khamliya – where we will enjoy local music. Later afternoon we ride camels into the desert to reach the desert camp -bivouac in Merzouga desert. We stay here overnight sleeping in Berber tents.
Today we head from Merzouga to visit Risani -the Mausoleum of the founder of the Alaouite Dynasty – Moulay Ali Chrif. In Rissani we will visit a local large souk. Then we head towards Todgha Gorge which is situated in High Atlas Mountains. Here we will enjoy a hike among canyons. We stay in Todra overnight in a local hotel.
Today in the morning we depart to the road of 1000 kasbahs. Then we pass Boumalen situated on the edge of Dades Valley. In this valley, locals produce cosmetic products such as soaps and perfumes. Locals here celebrate rose by organizing a festival. After that, we reach Ouarzazate (the Hollywood of Africa). It is mainly inhabited by Berbers and we will visit here Taourirt Kasbah, also Morocco’s biggest studios (Lawrence of Arabia, The Living Daylights, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven). We stay here in a local hotel for this night.
Today we will visit the fortified city of Aït Benhaddou. Once upon a time, this Kasbah was a former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh. Ait Benhaddou-Kasbah has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Then we head to the town of Taroudant which is called the “Grandmother of Marrakesh”. Taroudant has rich plains and farms of grapes and it is a notable marketing town with its souk. We stay here overnight in a local hotel.
Today we drive 70 km to reach Agadir city – which is the capital of Berbers. It is a very modern city that is located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean and has the most important fishing and commercial port in Morocco. Also, it is the 1st sardine port in the world. Agadir is a modern, busy, and dynamic town and is very famous for its seafood. After exploring Agadir we head towards Essaouira to visit this city. Essaouira has also been known by its Portuguese name Mogador. We stay here in a local hotel and you will have a free program to discover the city.
Today in the morning we explore Essaouira coast which is well known for its kite surfing and windsurfing, horse riding, and camel riding along the beach. Since 1998 Essaouira has been famous for its Gnaoua Festival of Music. We are also this night in Essaouira.
Along the halfway between Essaouira and Marrakesh, you will see an enormous Argan tree on both sides of the road. These Argan trees are frequently climbed by goats. Argan oil is produced by several women’s cooperatives and it is used to prepare couscous and salads. Moreover, it was traditionally used as a treatment for skin diseases before being found as good enough for cosmetics by European manufacturers. Still stopping by one of these cooperatives is worthy to see how Berber women squeezed the Argan fruits between hands to extract this precious oil. We arrive at our hotel in Marrakesh and if time permits we go out for a walk.
Today a full guided tour is scheduled to explore Marrakech city (known as the “Red City”). It is the most important former imperial city in Morocco (situated near Atlas Mountain). Marrakech comprises an old fortified city (The Medina) and also a very modern city (called Gueliz). Marrakesh has the largest traditional market in Morocco. We will explore Djemaa el Fna Square – which is full of story-tellers, water sellers, dancers, and snake charmers. Then we also visited The Koutoubia Mosque, a house called Dar Pacha El Glaoui. We are staying in Medina in a local hotel near the main square.
