Day Trips from Marrakech to Essaouira, We depart for Essaouira and during the journey to this former Portuguese fishing village we will pass a few occasional Berber villages. In the ’60s and ’70s, Essaouira was a stop on the hippie trek from Marrakech. Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Cat Stevens made the pilgrimage.
Essaouira City was the inspiration for Hendrix’s song “Castles Made of Sand”. It was called Mogador by European sailors and traders and is known for its annual Gnaoua Music Festival. We will visit the medina of Essaouira – which is a UNESCO World Heritage. Then we will explore a beach for surfing called Plage de Safi. We will also explore the main square, Place Prince Moulay el Hassan, and the fishing harbor.
En route to Essaouira, we will stop at an Argan cooperative to see how women make Argan oil, also nut butter, and cosmetics.
We will have lunch at the fish restaurant near the sea. Later afternoon we drove back to Marrakech.
